Preface

IN THIS BOOK I have tried to recapture the wonder and bewilderment of one who was struggling to find where he belonged during the first forty years of this fantastically changing century. To borrow a threat from Mark Twain: "Anyone who accuses me of name dropping will be shot!" My memoir, like my life, is full of people; my success as an editor depended on how we worked together, and I consider it a privilege as well as a pleasure to remember them.
