NEWS LETTER NO. 18
Dear Guys:
So much has been going on during the past months that it is hard to know where to begin. GHQNY has been in a complete flap, with some 300 AFSers returning, but it's wonderful to see so many familiar faces. Due to the many AFSers who have returned to the States, we are going to send the news letter each month to them at home, in addition to sending it overseas. In this way, it is hoped that the members of the organization, although widely scattered, may be able to keep in touch with each other. We shall give you all the news we are able to collect and if you have any items, you might send them along, so your friends will know what you're doing.
The AFS casualty list continues to grow. Gerald Murphy of the India Command was instantly killed and Gilbert Collyer was badly hurt, when the jeep in which they were riding with a British Officer swerved to avoid hitting a parked truck. Gilbert is getting along well and hopes to be out of the hospital soon. John Parkhurst of India died on July 3rd. He entered the hospital on June 20th with malaria, and a few days later enteric fever developed. Other complications set in and although everything possible was done to save his life, he couldn't pull through. Richard von Glatz also of the India Command, was slightly wounded in the foot, but is getting along well now.
Added honor for the AFS Mort Wright, Robert Campbell, William Farnham and Merle Hall were awarded the B.E.M. and Porter Jarrell, who was AFS Unit 16, received the George Medal.
Before 567 Coy left for the east, they were reviewed by Sir Ronald Adam, Adjutant-General of the British Army. It was a very impressive ceremony and the General had the entire British Army in a major flap because he insisted that the men going on should have their ribbons before they departed. Ee sent special dispatch riders to collect them and some 95 AFSers departed for India with sufficient ribbons to show they were really veterans. The 1939-1945 Star, the Italy Star, the France-Germany Star and the Burma Star have all been authorized. The only ribbon that is available at this time seems to be the 1939-45 Star, but it is hoped that the others will arrive before too long. Ridabock Uniform Company at 420 Madison Avenue and Charles M Howatt at 44 West 50th Street have a supply of the 1939-45 ribbon*
Field Marshal Alexander presented the AFS with a small autographed Union Jack. The flag, together with the presentation letter, is being framed and will be here in 60 Beaver Street, so you can see it when you come in.

The AFS was well represented at a cocktail party given by Dick Norton on July 12th. Paul Rodgers will marry Majorie Welter on August 3rd, and Bill Stump expects to be a married man before the end of July--- the lucky girl is Joyce Morrill. Barbara Coffin became Mrs. Richard Momsen in June 19th. We've just heard that John Gulick became engaged to Margaret Eaton before he departed to Germany with the U.S. Army ---news sometimes takes a while, but we get it eventually
The Eddie Masbacks have announced the birth of a son, who has been named Bryan in memory of Bob.
